A Work Force: ChatGPT Usage Soaring Both On-The-Job & Amongst Young Adults

← Back to blogPublishing

Hard to imagine considering the splashes ChatGPT has made in our publishing circles, but there are still some people out there who not only are getting by without ChatGPT, but who’ve never even heard of it.

According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, two-thirds of Americans haven’t used the AI chatbot, and a full fifth say “they’ve heard nothing about it.”

“Use of ChatGPT is up across age groups and education levels, but some groups remain more likely than others to have used it,” writes Pew Research Center’s Olivia Sidoti and Colleen McClain about the third (34%) of Americans who’ve used the tool. “As in previous years, young adults stand out in their ChatGPT use. Today, 58% of adults under 30 say they have used it, up from 43% in 2024 and 33% in 2023.”

The percentage who have used ChatGPT for work has risen to 28%, up 8 percentage points from last year and 20 percentage points from two years ago.

“Adults with higher levels of formal education are more likely than those with less education to have used ChatGPT,” the article says. “About half of those with a bachelor’s degree only (51%) or a postgraduate degree (52%) say they have used ChatGPT, compared with smaller shares of those with some college experience (33%) or a high school degree or less education (18%).”

And while ChatGPT and Google (with its omnipresent AI Overviews and Gemini) may be the name brands in the space, EMARKETER says it’s worth watching their lead as “rivals are gaining ground with specialized features that could fragment the market and challenge adoption.”

“The shift from general AI chatbots to task-specific AI agents has resulted in a burgeoning landscape of competitors — including Salesforce, Cohere, Inflection AI, and Microsoft — challenging OpenAI for enterprise adoption,” writes EMARKETER’s Gadjo Sevilla.
