AI’s apparent takeover of search has been swift, widespread, and all-consuming for users, but if the results of a recent poll are any indication, that use “hasn’t translated into trust.”
Only 15% of those recently surveyed by Yelp trust the information provided by AI-powered search tools “a lot,” with nearly two-thirds (63%) double-checking results with other sources.
“More than half of respondents (51%) say AI results feel like a ‘walled garden’ that makes it hard to verify what they’re reading,” writes Yelp’s Craig Saldanha. “Consumers aren’t taking AI-generated results at face value. They want to see the receipts.”
Two-thirds (66%) want proof of sources like links to news sites with their search results, while 72% say AI search platforms should always show the source of their information.

“When consumers ask for transparency, they’re questioning the answers they’re given and want to see the proof,” writes Saldanha. “To fix this trust problem, AI search platforms need to be designed as a bridge to trusted sources, rather than a dead end.”

FAST FAQ
How does trust-building source transparency in AI search affect my organic traffic?
When AI platforms show source links — which most users now demand — publishers with authoritative, well-structured content benefit directly. Sites that are regularly cited by AI tools gain referral visibility and brand association with credibility. On the other side, publishers without clear authorship, sourcing, or structured data are less likely to be surfaced as references.
