All In On AI: Publishers Say AI Discovery Is a Net Positive

The publishers have spoken.

According to a recent study, an overwhelming 95% say that AI and LLMs are making an impact on their organizations and, despite what can obviously be called a “real disruption,” 4 out of 5 categorize the “net impact of LLM-driven discovery as positive.”

“Publishers are feeling the impact of AI-driven content discovery in measurable ways and most are responding with cautious optimism,” says the press release for IAB’s recently released study, entitled The AI Discovery Shift: How Publishers Are Navigating LLM-Driven Content Discovery. “However, publisher optimism is conditional. When asked to look ahead, only 51% believe LLMs will become an important source of value for their business, contingent on the development of fair exchange models.”

More than half (51%) of publishers have signed at least one AI licensing deal, with another 35% in active negotiations. Beyond the direct payments, publishers listed the following priorities in that value exchange:

  • Referral traffic
  • The ability to “measure downstream value”
  • Revenue-sharing agreements

“Publishers are also seeking greater control over how their content is accessed and summarized,” says the press release, “with attribution, transparency, and industry standards consistently emerging as the structural needs the ecosystem must address before a sustainable commercial model can take hold.”
